One of my pups from a litter last year had this done instead of a full spay. It's supposed to be the wave of the future, and I think it's a good way to go. It's done laproscopically, so less invasive, quicker healing time, and the uterus can still give off some beneficial hormones, but will stay in a juvenile small state. I am wondering if it will help avert some of the spay incontinence seen in spayed girls (?). The owner is great about keeping in touch, so I will be able to see how she does with this type of spay.

That's interesting. I haven't heard of that procedure. Hopefully it will be a good thing. It sounds much less traumatic than a full spay.

That's interesting Jeanne. I've never heard of it being done that way. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has had this done with their dogs.
Makes me wonder though, since uterine cancer is so wide spread with so many breeds and this is often one of the reasons mentioned in why dogs should be spayed, would this be as safe as a complete hysterectomy? Just wondering.

I was just wondering the same thing. It certainly does sound easier for the girls than a complete spay, just wondering if it is best in the long run?

Uterine cancer isn't that common; what you see most often is pyrometria. Since in a juvenile ovarectamy the uterus never matures, that isn't seen as an issue. Interestingly, a recent study showed that bitches spayed after the age of 6 live longer than those spayed young. Not that I am advocating that people wait that long if they have just a pet (unrealistic.) Not sure that would really pertain to boxers, either, since they have several serious health issues not related to neutering.

Very interesting. The incontinence issue makes sense anatomically for sure. Maybe having less (ovarian) hormones to deal with will be a cancer inhibitor as well. Thanks for sharing info and would love to learn more when you do.
